Web Design

Just a few simple notes, because I'm not here to tell you how to design web pages, there are plenty of sites that will do that.

However, I would like to encourage anyone to have a go. I know, in the begining, it's difficult to get your head around, especially for an old fart like me. There is still a lot I can't do, but I do enjoy the challenge.

As I say elsewhere, I am principally a typographer (design for print), I expect stuff to stay where I position it and not move about all over the place like it does with web pages.

What you are looking at is probably slightly different from what I can see.

Then there's the typefaces (fonts as you lot call them), unless you use an image file, you are really only safe with Times, Arial, Courier, Georgia and Verdana.

Also, it really bugs me that I can't control line breaks.

Create a "Flow Chart" of your website. This is the "floor plan" of your online site.

Sort the pages into logical order to make navigation easy, too many distractions (toys) will lead to confusion. Tear it apart and rebuild.

It may take several attempts before it looks and works to your satisfaction. Anyone can build a site in one day; but it will look like a one day site.

Keep it simple. The power of good design is in its simplicity. Define the essence. Know your target market.

Don't be seduced by form over content. The designer concerned with content is more likely to make a meaningful contribution than the designer who is primarily concerned with form.

Consideration its transmission speed. If it takes too long to download, go back to the drawing board.

Learn to communicate and work with others. It takes more than one person to make a site, peer reviews are worth their weight in gold.

Remember it takes twice as long as you think, so take your time to make a pleasing design, it's has to look as if someone has expended time and effort.

It needs to be easy to navigate and understand. Make it relevant, fresh and up to date.

An element of interaction with the reader will also help.
